Variety is the Spice of Life

Posted by admin on June 4, 2009

No body likes feeling fat, not being able to fit into your clothes or feel attractive can seriously dent your self-esteem; and this damage to you self esteem can be the beginning of a downward spiral that leads to comfort eating, more weight gain and even more damage to your self esteem.

One thing that most programmes agree on is that there is no quick fix when it comes to losing weight and keeping it off—it takes work. Dieting is work, but choosing the right diet for your body and your lifestyle can make the experience less of a chore. Some people have a hard time counting calories and preparing healthy meals due to busy lifestyles or lack of cooking skills, and for those people diet plans with prepared meals, delivery services, or planned menus can make losing weight a snap. Other people don’t like pre-prepared food or need larger portions. For them, preparing their own meals based on their tastes means that there is a much better chance they will actually stick to their diets. Plus, then they can eat larger portions of vegetables and fruits to help keep them full without consuming too many calories. Others like to be able prepare some of their own meals and purchase prepared foods for some of their meals. They need plans with lots of flexibility that can incorporate spontaneity.

Exercise programs are just as varied as diets. Some people can run for miles or do aerobics for hours, while others prefer lower impact workouts like swimming, yoga, or Pilates. Some people are self-starters who motivate themselves while others burn more fat in class settings with a trainer there to motivate them. Some people dislike exercising altogether and need fun classes or sports like tennis that feel less like a workout. The best way to figure out which exercises you are going to enjoy the most is to head over you your local gym and try a few things out. Go to a few classes, try out the equipment, hop into the pool, or pick up a racquet. You will be more likely to stick to your workouts if you enjoy what you are doing!

When it comes to losing weight, it is always easiest if you take your lifestyle and preferences into account when choosing a plan to follow. What works for your best friend or sister may not work for you. If you play to your strengths and chose a program that isn’t a huge stretch for you it’s going to be easier to stick to and ultimately you are going to have more success.

You Should Know How Your Diet Is Supposed To Work

Most people start a diet in order to lose weight. There are a number of approaches to losing weight and changing your approach to eating is just one of them.

When you decide that you need to lose weight, the first thing to consider is your motivation for wanting to lose weight; is it to improve your health? Reduce your risk of certain chronic diseases? Or is it to improve you appearance to others?

If your aim is to improve your health or to reduce your risks then the amount of time taken to lose the weight is of less consequence than achieving a change to a healthy lifestyle that you can stick to for the rest of your life.  Long term diet plans usually achieve steady weight loss; provide healthy, balanced nutrition and encourage you to change your approach to food on a life long basis.

If you are motivated by appearance you are much more likely to want to achieve the maximum weight loss in the shortest amount of time; with this as your motivation you are much more likely to try a diet plan that promises rapid weight loss and will probably be unhealthy. Diets aimed at those seeking quick weight loss are much more likely to make outrageous claims for their particular “magic” ingredient, rely on unproven or unhealthy techniques such as excluding particular foods or food groups. These types of diet very rarely achieve any long term weight loss, asre unhealthy and in some cases downright dangerous. These diets are sometimes called “fad” diets, a classification that includes diet plans such as the Cabbage Soup Diet, the Grapefruit Diet and to some extent low carbohydrate plans such as the Atkins Diet.

Before embarking on any diet plan you should make sure that it meets your needs, you should be fully aware of how it claims to achieve its results and any health concerns surrounding it. If you have any concerns at all you should discuss it with your doctor prior to commencing the plan.

Lemonade Diet

Posted by admin on May 23, 2009

The Lemonade Diet or Lemonade Fast is essentially a 10 day fast where you drink nothing but a “special” lemonade. It is described in the book Master Cleanser by Stanley Burroughs. Although it was not orginally intended as a weight loss diet, it has been promoted as being able to achieve dramatic weight loss.

During the ten day period you drink nothing but the “special” lemonade; this is supplemented by a herbal laxative tea before bed and a salt water flush in the mornings.

As a weight loss programme, this is likely to lead to a relatively large weight loss due to the diet containing so few calories; however, this is not without its problems as consuming so few calaorie is likely to cause headaches and lack of concentration. Another point of concern would be the salt water flush, the dangers associated with consuming too much salt are well documented, so it is difficult to believe that this can actually be healthy.

Although it was not originally intended as a weight loss programme, its promotion as such places it firmly in the category of a fad diet.

I’ve been asked numerous times what the recipe is for the lemonade diet or lemonade fast. I’ve partially included it on day 1 of my experience with the lemonade diet. However this doesn’t have all the details such as how to make the Salt Water Flush or what type of tea one should drink at night.

If you’ve never heard of the lemonade diet

, basically it is a 10-day fast where you drink nothing but a special “lemonade” drink. It is one of the best known methods for cleaning out your intestinal and colon walls. Although not intended as a weight-loss diet, it is effective at helping you balance your body and “rebooting” the metabolic process - which often results in weight loss (I lost around 10 lbs on this). *If you are looking instead for primarily weight/fat loss I would highly recommend the Burn the Fat [see picture to the right] program. I had a lot of success with its principles.

Well here goes:

Lemonade Diet Recipe

For at least 10 days, drink around 10 servings/day of the following:

  • 2 Tablespoons (1 fluid ounce) fresh-squeezed lemon or lime juice NOT BOTTLED JUICE!! (approx. 1/2 lemon),
  • 2 Tablespoons (1 fluid ounce) organic Grade B maple syrup,
  • 1/10 Teaspoon or more cayenne pepper (hot red pepper), and
  • 1 Cup (8 fluid ounces) purified or spring water, NOT fluoridated water.

(This is what I did) This is the equivalent of taking an empty gallon water jug and filling it with:

  • the juice of 5 lemons
  • 1 1/4 cup of organic Grade B maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
  • 10 cups of water

Shake it all up and you got your days’ serving!

Salt-Water Flush Recipe

Upon rising drink a mixture of:

  • 2 level teaspoons of uniodized sea salt to a…
  • quart of lukewarm water

Herbal Laxative Tea (You can find this at most grocery stores)

Each evening drink an herbal laxative tea to help with elimination - preferably right before bed.

That’s it! Do that for at least ten days for a complete intestinal cleanse. If you haven’t read my experience with the 10-day lemonade diet, check it out here. Or if you just want to read about the final results you can go directly to the 10th day of the lemonade diet.
